Celebrate love with these soft, buttery sugar cookies decorated with colorful icing and sprinkles, perfect for Valentine’s Day.

Ingredients

Cookies

  • cups all-purpose flour (345 g)
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp fine sea salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (225 g)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (200 g)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp almond extract (optional)

Icing

  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted (360 g)
  • 3–4 tbsp milk (or water), plus more as needed
  • 1½–2 tbsp light corn syrup
  • tsp vanilla extract (or 1 tsp vanilla + ½ tsp almond extract)

Decorations

  • as desired Valentine’s sprinkles
  • as desired gel food coloring (red, pink)

Instructions 

  • Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Beat butter and sugar until light, then add egg and extracts.
  • Add dry ingredients in two parts, mix until dough forms. Chill for 1–2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 175°C / 350°F. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness, cut into hearts, and bake for 8–11 minutes.
  • Prepare icing by mixing powdered sugar, milk, corn syrup, vanilla, and salt. Tint with food coloring.
  • Pipe outlines and flood centers with icing. Decorate with sprinkles. Let dry completely before stacking.

Notes

Chill dough thoroughly for best results and decorate once cookies are completely dry.
