Ingredients

dry ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 1.5 tbsp cocoa powder (Dutch process)
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt

wet ingredients

  • 5 tbsp unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 egg egg (at room temperature)
  • 1 egg yolk egg yolk (at room temperature)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (at room temperature)
  • 1.5 tsp red gel food coloring

frosting ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 oz cream cheese (cold)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

  • sprinkles optional sprinkles for decorating

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with liners.
  • Mix dry ingredients in a bowl; beat wet ingredients separately, then combine.
  • Divide batter into liners and bake for 15 minutes; cool completely.
  • Beat cream cheese and butter, then add powdered sugar and food coloring to make frosting.
  • Frost cooled cupcakes and decorate with sprinkles if desired.
