A hearty and cheesy baked casserole combining seasoned ground beef, thinly sliced potatoes, and melted cheese for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Meat

  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably lean (85/15))

Vegetables

  • 4 medium potatoes (russet or Yukon gold, peeled and sliced thin)
  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped)

Dairy & Cheese

  • 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • ½ cup milk (for creaminess)
  • 2 tbsp butter (melted)

Seasonings

  • to taste salt (start light and adjust after baking)
  • to taste pepper (freshly ground)
  • to taste garlic powder (adds subtle savory note)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Cook ground beef until browned, then drain excess fat.
  • Sauté chopped onion in the skillet with beef, then season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in a greased 9×13-inch dish, season lightly, then spread beef mixture over.
  • Top with remaining potato slices. Mix milk and melted butter, pour over layers, then sprinkle cheese on top.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes, then remove foil and bake 15-20 minutes until bubbly and golden. Rest 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Ensure potatoes are sliced thin for even cooking and melded flavors.
