Sweet, deeply flavored caramelized onions perfect for burgers, dips, or as a side.
Ingredients

yellow onions
(peeled)

tablespoons
unsalted butter
to taste

Low-sodium chicken broth or water
for pan
(for deglazing)
Instructions
Slice onions thinly and season with a pinch of salt.
Melt butter in a large pan over medium heat, then add onions gradually, cooking and stirring until soft.
Reduce heat to medium-low and cook onions, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, about 30 minutes.
If desired, add a splash of broth or water to deglaze and deepen flavor, cooking a few more minutes.
Let onions cool, then transfer to an airtight container and store up to 1 week.
Notes
Caramelized onions can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to a week.
