Ingredients

Butter

  • 1/2 cup butter

Dry ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon (can omit)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Brown sugar topping

  • 1-1/2 cups light brown sugar, packed
  • 1-1/2 cups boiling water

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Melt butter in a 9x13 inch dish in the oven.
  • Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Combine milk, bourbon, and vanilla; add to dry ingredients and stir until smooth.
  • Pour batter over melted butter. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over top.
  • Slowly pour boiling water over the mixture. Bake for 30 minutes until bubbly and caramelized.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for a delightful dessert.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use high-quality bourbon or omit it entirely.
