1cupunsalted butter
3cupscake flour
1cupgranulated sugar
1cuplight brown sugar, firmly packed
1teaspoonbaking powder
1/2teaspoonbaking soda
1teaspoonsalt
1 1/2cupsbuttermilk, room temperature preferred
2largeeggs, room temperature preferred
1 1/2teaspoonsvanilla extract
1 1/2cupspecan halves, very finely chopped
Frosting
1 1/2cupsunsalted butter, softened
6ozcream cheese, softened
1/3cuplight brown sugar, firmly packed
1 1/2teaspoonsvanilla extract
1/4teaspoonsalt
4 1/2cupspowdered sugar
1tablespoonheavy cream
1/3cuppecan halves, very finely chopped(for garnish, optional)
Instructions
Cook butter over medium/low heat until melted, then increase heat and cook until golden brown specks appear. Cool completely.
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease three 8-inch pans and line with parchment.
Chop pecans finely; set aside 1 1/2 cups for cake and 1/3 cup for garnish.
Mix dry ingredients, add cooled browned butter, then incorporate buttermilk, eggs, vanilla, and chopped pecans. Divide into pans and bake 30 minutes. Cool.
Prepare frosting by beating butter, cream cheese, sugars, vanilla, and salt. Add powdered sugar and heavy cream until smooth. Assemble and frost the cake, decorating with chopped pecans if desired.

For best flavor, toast pecans lightly before chopping.
