Ingredients

Yeast

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/4 cup warm water (About 110°F) (for activating yeast)

Sugar

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (About 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)

Flour

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Butter for brushing

  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions 

  • Dissolve yeast in warm water with a pinch of sugar; let stand until frothy, about 5 minutes.
  • Mix yeast mixture, sugar, warm milk, melted butter, egg, flour, and salt; knead until smooth.
  • Let dough rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Punch down dough, divide into 12 pieces, shape into balls, and place in a greased pan.
  • Cover and let rise for 30 minutes; preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush rolls with melted butter.
  • Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown; brush with more melted butter before serving.

Notes

For softer rolls, let dough rise in a warm, humid environment.
