Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground all-spice

Butter

  • 10 tablespoons unsalted butter (cold, cubed)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 large egg (cold)
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Main Ingredient

  • 1.5 cups granny smith apples (peeled or unpeeled)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 3 tablespoons sparkling sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)

Glaze

  • 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar (sifted)
  • 1.5 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Mix dry ingredients and cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  • Stir in apples, eggs, vanilla, and applesauce. Form dough and cut into wedges.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden. Cool slightly.
  • Mix glaze ingredients and drizzle over warm scones.

Notes

For best results, use cold butter and handle dough minimally to keep scones tender.
